With temperatures soaring in many parts of the country, it's essential for seniors to take extra precautions to stay safe in the summer heat. Older adults are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses like heat stroke because their bodies are less efficient at regulating temperature. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Climate Central report that more than 9,000 seniors in the U.S. die from heat-related causes each year. To help prevent these risks, here are some simple and effective strategies for staying safe in the heat.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water is crucial. As we age, our sense of thirst can diminish, so it's important for seniors to drink water regularly, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Carry a water bottle to track your intake, aiming for 2.2 to 3 liters a day, or as advised by your healthcare provider. Be mindful to avoid drinks that can dehydrate you, such as alcohol, coffee, tea, and soda.

Avoid the Heat

 

Stay cool by spending time indoors with air conditioning. If you need to go outside, try to do so during the cooler parts of the day, like early morning or late evening, and avoid direct sunlight as much as possible.

Dress Smart

Wear light-colored, loose-fitting, and lightweight clothing to help stay cool. Fabrics like cotton and linen allow air to circulate and help your body release heat. A wide-brimmed hat in a light color can also provide extra protection from the sun.
